Summer Camps
You have two options with summer camps: residential (overnight) and day camps. These organizations offer sessions of varying lengths (typically one to two weeks). There are many camps specifically designed for kids with diverse needs. Please see "Selecting a Camp for Your Child" in this issue of Positively Autism for more information and resources. Private School "Day Camp" or Summer School Programs Many private schools offer a daily summer school program. These types of programs often offer "enrichment" type activities, such as art, music, field trips, "water day," etc. There may also be some that have a more academic focus. Check your local yellow pages, or a directory such as Great Schools to find a private school near you. Extended School Year Extended School Year is a summer school program offered by the U.S. public school system. Eligibility for this service is determined by the child's IEP team on a case-by-case basis. If your child is eligible, this service is provided at no cost to parents/guardians. For the full legal definition, please see Sec. 300.309 on this page of Wright's Law. Community Organizations Community Organizations, such as YMCA or Easter Seals may offer summer camp or child care programs. Visit the websites of the YMCA or Easter Seals to see what services are available in your area. Learning at Home One option is to work with your child at home on academic or other goals. As a parent, you know your child best, and can create educational activities based on his or her unique interests (such as math problems about trains or aircraft). Another at-home option is to hire a tutor. To find tutors, you can contact local tutoring agencies, such as Sylvan Learning Centers, check your local yellow pages, or visit websites such as AutismTutors.com. Here are some of my favorite websites for learning games to use at home:
