18-Year-Old with Autism Performs Piano
Brittany Maier, an 18-year-old who has autism and is blind, regularly performs for crowds on the piano. Brittany rarely speaks, but can perform hundreds of songs, often after hearing a song only a few times. She performs publicly around twice per week, and released her first album at the age of 12. Colleges Implement Transition Programs for Students with Autism
The University of Alabama has received a one-year grant from the Alabama Council for Developmental Disabilities to develop and implement a college transition program for students with autism. Students enrolled in the program must be admitted to the university meeting the same requirements as other students, but are provided with additional support once enrolled. Students are provided with mentors to help navigate college life. Mentors guide the students with tasks such as building relationships with peers, improving interactions with instructors, time management, and daily living. A few similar programs exist nationwide, and help provide the opportunity for individuals with autism use their gifts and talents and to be successful in college.
