Instructions:
The following webpages contain a series of activities to help students practice using a computer mouse. Each page will contain a single shape, with nothing else on the page. This is to prevent distraction. When the student clicks the shape, it will reveal a photo of a train, as a "reward" for clicking with the mouse. After you see the train, the teacher clicks the word, "Next" to go to the next page. The size of the shapes starts large to make it easier for the student initially, and the shapes will gradually get smaller as you go on.

Some additional tips before you teach:
  • Use a one-button mouse when a student is first learning, like this one.

  • Go into your computer's settings, and adjust the size of the mouse arrow as large as it will go.

  • You may need to physically prompt your student at first by guiding his or her hand to make the correct motions, but try to fade (reduce) this prompt as soon as possible. For more information on how to fade prompts, please read this blog post.

  • Another practice idea is to disconnect the mouse from your computer and practice clicking the mouse when it's not connected. The student can practice the clicking action before using it on the computer. The good thing about this is that the child will be more prepared when you start working with the computer, but the downside is that the child won't have a context for why you're practicing this because nothing will happen when he or she clicks. If you do this pre-practice, use the same prompts and prompt fading as described above.

  • Emphasize that the arrow needs to touch the shape.
