Module 4: What Treatments and Programs Are Currently Supported by Research?

Selected Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Based Interventions

Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)
Brief Description: An assessment of what happens before a problem behavior (an antecedent) and what happens after a problem behavior (a consequence) to help look for a pattern in events that consistently come either before or after a behavior occurs. This information is used to develop a behavior intervention plan.

Research Status from Association for Science in Autism Treatment (ASAT): Well-established.

Research Status from the National Standards Report: Not available.

Research Status from the Professional Development Center on ASD: Meets EBP criteria.

Functional Communication Training (FCT)
Brief Description: FCT is based on the idea that problem behavior serves a communicative function (such as a tantrum communicating the desire to leave a situation). Once a likely function of the behavior (such as escaping from a situation) has been determined, a communication behavior that serves the same function is taught.

Research Status from Association for Science in Autism Treatment (ASAT): an “appropriate strategy” for use in reducing problem behavior.

Research Status from the National Standards Report: Established, as part of a behavioral package (a variety of behavioral interventions) for all ages of students with autism and PDD-NOS. Research Status from the Professional Development Center on ASD: Meets EBP criteria.
