Module 6: Reducing Problem Behaviors

FBA/Replacement Behaviors

Functional Assessment is “arguably the most important component of effective behavior management.”
– John W. Maag, “Behavior Management: From Theoretical Implications to Practical Applications”

Have you ever wondered…
Why does my child act this way?
What is the purpose behind my student’s behavior?

Functional behavior assessment (FBA) allows us to explore these questions, and to teach positive behaviors (called “replacement behaviors”) that will take the place of problem behavior.

Generally, there are four functions (or purposes) of behavior. In behavior analysis research and textbooks, you will find more precise and scientific descriptions of the functions, but I like to use the following paraphrased list:

  • Attention
  • Access to Items or Activities
  • Escape/Avoidance
  • Sensory

(Adapted from the Functional Assessment Screening Tool [FAST])

Let's examine each of these in more detail.
