Module 6: Reducing Problem Behaviors

Consequence Interventions

In the last module, we looked at antecedent interventions to reduce problem behavior. These were proactive strategies that we can use to prevent problem behaviors from happening.

Next, we'll look again at our three-term contingency.

Consequence

As we can see, a consequence is something that happens AFTER a behavior has taken place. In the example, the consequence for the child's behavior is praise from the teacher.

We often think of a "consequence" as something like a punishment, but it can be either a reward (reinforcement) or punishment. In ABA terminology, a consequence is simply something that happens right after a behavior, whether it is good, bad, or neutral.

In our example above, if praise encourages the child to stay seated more during class, we've used reinforcement as a consequence intervention to help the child stay in his seat.

Next, we'll look at some specific consequence strategies.
