Transition Warnings Before we begin a new activity, I give my students a five-minute and a one-minute transition warning. It can be as simple as, “Thomas, in five minutes we are going to clean up blocks and go to circle time.” Then repeat the warning at one-minute. You can also show it with pictures if needed, but I often find that the verbal warning is enough. This increases compliance much more than abruptly directing a child to clean up when he or she wasn’t prepared for that transition. Another option is to use a timer app on a tablet or smartphone. My students have actually come to enjoy it when I set a timer using the timer app on my phone. Most of them like watching it, and enjoy clicking the button to turn it off. I have several students who don’t even need verbal directions any more because of the timer. They know when it rings, it’s time to put their materials away and line up at the door. It takes some practice to get into this routine, but with modeling and prompting, they’ve learned what to do when it rings. Here are additional examples of timers, including a visual timer using lights. Click the images to view the timers at Amazon.com.
