Module 5: Teaching New Skills and Behaviors

3-Term Contingency

A: Antecedent, B: Behavior, C: Consequence

The 3-term contingency is an outline of reinforcement in practice. When teaching a child to label different toys, you might do the following:
  1. Hold up a toy car and ask, "What is this?" (Antecedent)
  2. The child says, "car." (Behavior)
  3. You say, "That's right. Good job!" (Consequence)

In the above outline, antecedent refers to what happens right before a behavior, the behavior is the student’s response, and the consequence is what happens right after a behavior.

Review:

Antecedent refers to what happens __________ a behavior.

A __________ is what happens after a behavior occurs.

A behavior that is followed by a pleasant consequence (called a __________) is likely to be __________ in the __________.
